The 2009–2018 Ram 1500, known by its DS chassis code, helped set the fourth-generation Ram apart with a smoother-riding suspension and a huge range of configurations. Engine options evolved throughout the generation and included the 3.6L Pentastar V6, 5.7L HEMI V8, and 3.0L EcoDiesel V6, with the HEMI becoming the go-to choice for many performance and towing builds.
One of the biggest differences underneath the 4th Gen Ram 1500 is its coil-spring rear suspension. Instead of the traditional rear leaf springs used by most full-size pickups, Ram paired rear coils with independent front suspension, giving the truck a more comfortable ride while still leaving plenty of room for suspension upgrades. Factory air suspension was also available on certain models.
Wheel fitment uses a 5x139.7, or 5x5.5, bolt pattern. Factory wheel sizes commonly ranged from 17 to 20 inches, while the aftermarket opens the door to wider wheels, more aggressive offsets, and larger all-terrain or mud-terrain tires.
Leveling kits are a popular first step for reducing factory rake and gaining front tire clearance. From there, lift kits, upgraded shocks, control arms, and larger wheel and tire packages can turn the DS Ram into anything from a clean daily driver to an aggressive off-road or street-truck build.
