The 1988–1998 Chevy and GMC K1500 is one of the most recognizable 4x4 trucks from the GMT400 generation. Better known as the OBS Chevy or GMC, the K1500 is the four-wheel-drive half-ton version of the platform and remains a favorite for restorations, daily drivers, lifted builds, and old-school off-road trucks.
Under the hood, K1500 engine options included the 4.3L V6, 5.0L V8, and 5.7L small-block V8, with later trucks receiving the updated Vortec versions of these engines. The 5.7L became one of the most common choices and still has a massive aftermarket for maintenance and performance upgrades.
Underneath, the K1500 uses torsion-bar independent front suspension with a solid rear axle and leaf springs. That setup makes torsion-key leveling kits, upgraded shocks, and full suspension lifts popular options for owners looking to improve stance or create clearance for larger tires.
The K1500 uses a 6x139.7, or 6x5.5, bolt pattern, giving it access to a huge selection of aftermarket wheels. Whether you’re restoring a clean OBS, building a leveled truck on all-terrains, or putting together a lifted K1500 on aggressive wheels and mud tires, the platform gives you plenty of room to make it your own.
